چکیده

The Mapping, Charting and Geodesy Branch of the Naval Research Laboratory at Stennis Space Center, Mississippi. is conducting a multi-year program for the development of unmanned, untethered sensor systems for the collection of tactical oceanographic data in littoral regions. The primary function of this program is the development of immediate force-multiplying survey capabilities for the collection of hydrographic data to support the U.S. Naval Oceanographic O ce. This paper reviews the vessel, sensor systems, program progress to date and future plans for a comprehensive oceanographic survey system. The prototype platform currently in use for this project is the ORCA semi-submersible. The ORCA is an air-breathing vessel which travels just below the water surface. In contrast to a full-size survey ship, ORCA is able to collect bathymetric data of the same quantity and quality, but will have one-fortieth the life-cycle

The advent of multibeam bathymetry systems, which are capable of total seafloor ensonification, have made fundamental changes in hydrography. The new IHO S-44 standards challenge hydrographers to achieve even greater depth and position accuracy with multibeam systems. ORCA has made incremental improvements in each of these areas as demonstrated in a series of at sea survey tests. Improvements h...

Killer whales (Orcinus orca) produce ultrasonic whistles.

This study reports that killer whales, the largest dolphin, produce whistles with the highest fundamental frequencies ever reported in a delphinid. Using wide-band acoustic sampling from both animal-attached (Dtag) and remotely deployed hydrophone arrays, ultrasonic whistles were detected in three Northeast Atlantic populations but not in two Northeast Pacific populations. These results are inc...

Self-contained patient data in ORCA to cope with an evolving vocabulary

Because of the benefits of standardization in healthcare data for research, decision support, and quality assessment, much research effort focuses on collection of structured patient data. Many strategies to obtain such data are based on controlled vocabularies to guide data entry in a far more flexible way than a fixed-form approach. Medical controlled vocabularies evolve, but change is diffic...

Odontocete occurrence in relation to changes in oceanography at a remote equatorial Pacific seamount

Seamounts are considered hot spots of biodiversity and can aggregate pelagic predators and their prey. Passive acoustic monitoring was conducted over 3 mo in 2012 to document the occurrence of odontocetes near a seamount chain in the central equatorial Pacific in relation to oceanographic changes over time. Beaked whale echolocation signals were most frequently encountered. The main beaked whal...

A New Control System for the next Generation of Us and Uk Deep Submergence Oceanographic Rovs

This paper reports the development and results of at-sea eld testing of a new control system for remotely operated underwater vehicles. The control system provides model-based closed loop trajectory tracking control in addition to conventional PID control, dynamic power management, and a high level of power control and monitoring. The control system is presently deployed on three operational US...
